Household Remedies For Foggy Head

JJ Castro - There is always a concept in my

After weeks and weeks of fighting softness (yes, dear reader / listener does not know that term, I recommend read a story entitled Julio Ramón Ribeyro that way), after struggling against effeminacy, saying, I managed to stay afloat and, taking weak boat my self esteem, doubts sail north of my activities. Thus, in addition to catch up on my reading (I have piles of books that I review for my thesis), I took my tape recorder and began to transcribe the interview I did with JJ Castro earlier this year. JJ Castro, leader of the (for me) better rock band of the 90 Peruvian, Air, gave me a few minutes of your time, and I marveled at his clear intelligence and his ability to jump from one topic to another without losing the meaning general dialogue. I very much regret not having posted this interview before, and therefore, I reiterate my apology to Castro JJ. However, now that I've met my work as journalists, amateur rock critic, I think I can be calm, because I have made available to you, dear reader / listener, the words of JJ, our main cutting edge music.

The album "Air" opens with a song called "Rain on the walk." There is a clear reference to what is the Peruvian highlands. What is your relationship with Andean music?
I was born in Peru and I grew up in Peru. Then, Andean music soundtrack is a branch that I have always been present and I could not ignore. Besides, I like.

Now, I consider myself a musician mechanically limited. So, as an urban element, I have left is the synthesis. And this is reflected in what I do, it is to collect all listening experiences, which try to recreate as a vehicle of expression.
For the song you mention, it was appropriate to refer to the Andes. If we examine the Andes, we realize that they contain our water system. Decant the rain, sliding through canyons and river turns into ice. And that is driven life.

is interesting what you say, because the album "Air" most of the songs are about love that ends and even the last song is called "Terminal" and refers to a relationship that is dying slowly. So my question is how to relate the constant rebirth that you mention in "Rain on the walk" so to die in "Terminal"?
is well done your reading of the disc. There is a microphotograph hearing that in the passage between "Cardiogram" and "Limbo." Ie, die, go to limbo, and then reborn. So there is a crash. The songs are linked, so intencional.Ahora intentional and, in "Terminal", we can find the image of the patient who is dying, but most of all is life. I'm talking about life. What Nothing more, Nothing more. Not conceive of love if not practiced, if not good. And this can happen even if the partner is not meeting. Of course not necessarily have to be love. Well that feeling has to come and go. When you insist on a relationship that maybe is not positive, but enjoys magnetism-relationship in which one could fall into the absurd ", often the effort that goes not produce any results. And the couple will die.

And what has this to do with the revival of the Andean cycle?
think anything directly. Have been connected more with the life cycle.

I mean the disk structure Air. This is a rebirth of a ...

just as it begins: with an invocation.

course, now I remember. Finish with a shower. That is, the disc is a circle.

Yes, and you can read microcycles. Life also consists of microcycles. What starts just somehow. Processes are often truncated, there are other complete, but all have a beginning and an end.

The album "On Air" was the year 96. I remember that year in the journal Caleta, was chosen as best album for the public "Suicidal 16" Rafo Ráez. And, moreover, "Air" was noted as the most important for critics. Do you think that the work of air are specialized ear?
I think any group is a group for critical or noncritical. That is, a band is just a band.

What I mean is that the discs of the Air have been more critical reception among the public.
If so, is due to several reasons. First, perhaps the music of the air is not popular or not has become popular. Or, rather, has not made much effort to make it popular. In none of these cases I stepped on the accelerator. I have played little to what is usually played. I've worked little in the way media to what is customary. My presence is often inconspicuous. I've done concerts that have been off the track, as I also had the opportunity to make a big concert. So if the critics believe that many rockets will burst my work, it is perhaps because I made friends with some of them, I do not like fans but friends. And I related to these critics, because I wanted to meet a quite genuine in what is the musical work.

Now, some people have legitimately positive conviction about my work, and defend and uphold. Indeed, some are lawyers like you. I can say that are people who handle postulates not without basis, which is very interesting. Another thing that I discovered is that many of them have always been very gifted in school and college-which is somehow my antithesis, "and this seems very attractive. Moreover, there are some musicians who do not have great difficulty when evaluating my career. So if the Air is a band of critics and some musicians who have caused or influenced in any way, is because it makes alternative music, because it plays by the rules of the bands to which I am attracted. Use work methods that are not industry but rather are parallel to those in the industry. So I have no problem to show different qualities of sound, because my music consuming public understands what the situation and reports on the subject. So who likes Air, has reason to like him.

Look, one of the most beautiful expressions that I received came from a person whom I esteem and appreciate. I said, referring to "Air" and the triple album "to me these discs do not tell me Copy us, but rather" we are yours, do what you want with us. " That comment I was very impressed upon the mind.

The album "On Air" came out in mid 90's. What you heard then? Nirvana
Over there. Grunge had things that interested me. But at that time was focused on rebuilding my musical adolescence. The CD as a format was booming. So I tried to get on CD the albums to which he was so fond. However, when released on "The Downward Spiral" by Nine Inch Nails, I thought it was just before a masterpiece after a long time. Sure as I'm concerned I never copy that style. But that was the kind of work that I felt close.

Did you hear something Peruvian rock?
I confess that, back then, I found many groups. For example, first time I touch textures, in Arabic, with blue lights on his back, I was a very powerful feeling. In the same vein eighties, making Moro Blue also seemed interesting. We must remind the Chinese band Burga. I do not know how noventero is, Sister Lewd generated much interest me. Because I felt that his music was much better made than the average. He had a very high bill. And that is because those were the group: Nino Mele (which is a super producer), Ofelia Arellano (who never tires of doing a good job), Lucho Sanguinetti (which, quite apart from the non-musical, is a good musician .) On the other hand, I remember the Damned Poets and Seventh Heaven.

The other group is more than mention them, because they are well known. With them had a previous relationship, from when I started playing guitar at Red Smoke. I mention, for example, Carlos Gonzalez, of Radio Criminal, put a lot of strength to escena.Y good, in that decade, as one who does not like things, I fell in Leusemia, to record the Moxón.

discs And remember especially ...
course, "Crazy and Dirty" which is a very straw Rafo.

In that decade, the start was to make it yours. That's why I never believed that what they call industry. The big problem in Peru is that when a person begins to succeed, they usually put importance on that person, rather than in his work. So much is lost professionalism. And this is the same in state and private management. In the absence of qualitative north (which we see much in football), much is wasted. I repeat: the main thing is the object, not the subject. And this phenomenon prevents the realization of a larger process.

The other issue is more natural: the creation of circles or groups. I find this more valid. Then suddenly someone has been in music a while, then endeavors as producer, his work does well, is linked with outsiders, and soon creates a communication allows foreign circuits. "I can say anything against that? No. I applaud that achievement. It is the achievement of a personal effort ...

That, of course, has absolutely nothing wrong.
why deals are also repetitive rock bands in some massive festivals, those trying to become traditional. That's not bad. For these bands it suits them financially.

Now, there is a problem there. Not working culture of critical opinion. Be sectarian is an option. But the best is when one is exposed to everything. And he has the ability to appreciate everything. That way, you can come up with better views and judgments. If you If you are a judge, and if you know a part, not going to give it a good process to that case. You know him from end to end. And delve into it in detail to understand, approach it and fix it within the law.

work triple (three discs) of the air exits early 2000.Pero funny thing is that I used there electronic files dating from the 90.

How hard do you open?
With "The Conflict of Emotions" and are "A Day in the Radio" and "The Age of Light." It is a construction sequence.

Is there a concept behind this structure?
There is always a concept to me. It's something I flow naturally. The triple disc goes like this: there is chaos, which then turns into a response.

words: thesis, antithesis, synthesis. Something
. But the origin is in the conflict, in crisis, being or not being, in being or not being, in life or death. The starting point is a crisis. The crisis motivated the change.

Now, the idea of sailing a bit between the nuances of pop is a mockery of the concept of fucking cabaret. That is, a society composed of bands of pirates, we're on the sea with pirate flags and do what we want.

What was your relationship with the dictatorship of ten years and especially with the music that was his stooge: tecnocumbia? The tecnocumbia
always saw naturally. It was an evolution that would occur sooner or later. I anticipate that even in conversations I had with other musicians. Because for me, the Peruvian musical form where technology was best suited chicha (which is from where the tecnocumbia). Guitars hand put Diley effects like the wa-wa or Corus. The chicheros also took synthesizers, that produce different sounds. Some abuse the preset, but there were others who were doing a color job. In addition, his music has a percussive base, which is very easy to play in terms electronic and arrange them in the same style.

Now, about that tecnocumbia was comparsa of the dictatorship, I can not talk about it accurately. What I know is that "Do not Know Who and many do not know" were sold. And some other groups.

I can mention I'll be sold ... tecnocumbieras
But you have to separate the musical genre of the conduct of the artist.

I mention this because in your song "Smiling Antihero", the triple album, you pretty hard with the military and the politicians who were involved in the fatal Fujimori government.

I met a former army colonel, a person whom I have him much love and appreciation. This former colonel was pleased to present him a letter, which I never sent, where he expressed his frustration as a career soldier and a good man and citizen. It was not a person interested in kicking doors, raping women and burning with kerosene suspects. He, by the army, wanted to build roads, irrigation systems or do similar things. He saw the municipalities responsible for stealing, that is, was at what was really the crime of state. Well, besides the murders, there was also corruption. All that is the cornerstone of my rant.

Information I now you've found. As I worked on projects from the coast and mountains of Peru, I could talk to the protagonists of the conflict, which have had different roles, even within the terrorist camps. And what I've been told is not very different from the version of that former colonel. That is corruption and bad professional work that keeps us from achieving a successful life, quiet, with comprehensive social development. And this is because there is no concept behind. When there is no concept, no one knows how to take things. For example, if you have to bring a case in court ...

I do not think I should tell you that I have studied law ... If you want to change
example. Body Talk. If you do not have a concept of how to run a business administratively, it is impossible to get it right. Maybe they can conduct business in your pocket, but this is not appropriate. The company does not deserve it. Because it requires other professionals and leaders. Let's change the example, work for the state. That should be a pinnacle in the conduct of an individual. And behind must have good processes, good design and a proper distribution.

I have also mentioned the tecnocumbia, triple disk because there are moments when the guitars are chicheras and tecnocumbieras. Why use that sound? Do you like aesthetically? Or is it just part of the concept?
happens that these discs were carried out as follows. He said: "Which, let's put a drum in this manner." And so it was done. He immediately began to pull the lines. It was something intuitive. It was not made. It was composed in real time at the microphone. There was no testing or schemes. However, there were previous general ideas, which eventually materialized.

Now, the only song that had a data was "Hello Captain Bryce," which should have been in the Air II.

I was getting there. Tell me, who is Captain Bryce?
was the first friend The group was enthusiastic. He was the cousin of Constantine.

Was indeed a "master"?
No. But in the playful world was created this character. People give. And when they believe in something with a quality of feeling and affection that is special. When we perpetrábamos our music, Captain Bryce was there, was thrilled with what we were doing and made us think that what we were doing was worthwhile.

At first I rolled the idea that air is a critical group. However, last year (2008), La Noche en Blanco, in Miraflores, held a massive concert. How was the experience of having usually a small but growing audience, and suddenly, go play in front of a crowd?
For us it was only playing. Of course I would have been happier if the person in charge of monitoring had done their job. There was a lot of technical detail that limited my performance on stage and the rest of the band. Fortunately the external sound was good, at least apparently. Now, at first we were not going to play. I proposed another band: The Corporation. But organizers insisted that it was the air for a matter of tradition and other values and considerations. Moreover, the concert was in an open space on the street. And you have to understand that if anyone who is linked to sound interventions is to me, even when people who this affects their ego. In addition, the organizers did not wanted that music was what is commonly broken.

You mentioned an interesting phrase, "sound installations." Do you believe that your records are "sound installations"?
Yes, they are as incidental music for films.

Two more questions. A less screwed than the other. The first: what music is for you?
Music for me is space and time. They are images. A mental game. They are stimuli. They are portraits. These messages. My friend Camilo says: "There is no sound, only air is moving." He told me. I did not know that.

Music is one of the most honest expressions that human beings have. And the music business is one of the clearest expressions of the human trade.

Here comes the question fucked. "Leusemia or Rio? Both started in the 80's, peaked in the 80's, yet still sound and people have always maintained that follows. I repeat: Leusemia or Rio?
are not exclusive. As they have very different audiences. His public choose different types of gratification. Do you

by which you choose?
For Leusemia, because it is more akin to what I like. Well, they definitely have talent. And it is rock.

Now, the group does not seem Rock River. It's pop. And as such is minimal, which usually works within a certain group of people. There is a song of theirs that I liked a bit more than others: In North America. It seemed unlikely to see Rio doing rebellious music. But it seemed nice choice. In addition, production was not exaggerated, but very basic. I recognize that in Rio. Their schemes are always basic, very basic. And they had the ability to connect with pop audiences. For his songs have a clear method: the chorus hook.

If you put me one or the other (or Leusemia River), is something that I can not really answer. Because there is this paradigm. It is a paradigm that you want to hear, you want to invent or solace in it.

But you answer is more ironic than choosing one or another group. As you're trying to say that both do not compare.
are completely different.

But in reality the two are making music. They have a link. But you say that one is A and one B. And do not contrast.
But yes.

Well, Rio wants to believe it does rock.
That should speak personally with them to learn to think for themselves. And I have not had that privilege.

I can tell you, from my reading of interviews to Rio, they at least hallucinate that they rock. There
order to cut keke what is the truth, we have to enter a field of musicology. Musicology could tell us whether or not one is rock. But basically, any group that survives is because it has some kind of public. So, if you disqualify the group, would also be disempowering to people who consume the group. Now, what interests me put me in a plan of judging people by the type of music they listen? No. It seems absurd.

Let me tell you that your position is very tolerant and plural: it's smart.
Thanks. Actually, I'm willing to hear any station neo Rio eighties. Now, why is it on the radio? Well rejoice reasons. Of course nothing forces me to listen. I can change the dial. On the other hand, the dial is not going to listen to Leusemia equal to Rio. And the air, less, even with pop material and apparently tract.

Ok. This would be it. Thanks. Lights
overwhelmed.

Yes, more or less.

I hope, dear reader / listener, I've enjoyed this interview and, of them, pick up ideas to help you understand more fully the work of the Air. Until the next post! Díaz Meza
